New York Knicks Rumors: Could Carmelo Anthony be looking at the Clippers?

When the New York Knicks first talked about trading for Carmelo Anthony, the initial thought was that they would look to try and sign point guard Chris Paul as well.

That obviously didn’t happen, but there still appears to be a chance that Melo and CP3 could eventually end up teammates after all.

Unfortunately for Knicks fans, it could be in Los Angeles.

According to HoopsWorld’s Steve Kyler, many around the Knicks doubt that Carmelo Anthony will re-sign with the team this summer, and they believe the Los Angeles Clippers are the team most likely to land last year’s scoring champion.

Those same sources suggest the Knicks may try to trade Anthony to the Clippers before the February 20th deadline, Kyler writes.

Kyler also suggests that the Knicks are now reluctant to make Anthony a max offer in the summer, which would take away the team’s built-in financial advantage for re-signing its own player.

Anthony has made it clear he intends to exercise the early termination option on his deal and test free agency this summer, but it’s not a given that he would do so if he’s traded this season, Kyler says.

He notes that the Clippers or another team could attempt to see if Anthony is willing to waive his option before agreeing to any trade.

However a trade wouldn’t necessarily be easy for the Knicks to make.

Bleacher Report’s Jared Zwerling recently posed the idea that an Anthony-Blake Griffin swap could be on the table and it would likely take a star like Griffin for the Knicks to consider the move.

However keep in mind that Anthony is making nearly $21.4 million this year, which means the Knicks would have to take back a lot of money. That figure alone would make any swap difficult, and it doesn’t sound like the Knicks are actively talking to teams about trading him, at least for the time being.

But one thing is clear and that is with each passing week it looks more and more like Anthony could be on his way out of the Big Apple.

If that’s the case, the Knicks better try and get some value for their superstar before it is too late.
