The New York Knicks currently sit near the bottom of the Atlantic Division, and have mostly played like a lottery team. They were riding a nine-game losing streak prior to their current two-game win streak. But, possible hope is coming soon. Tyson Chandler is reportedly just two weeks away from a return. He has not been playing for the Knicks during their 2-9 record as of late, but he will impact the team once he returns.
On the court, Chandler obviously brings outstanding defense. Defensive Player of the Year just two seasons ago, Chandler is a force to be reckoned with in the paint. He can clog the paint, making it harder for those easy points the Knicks seem to give up on a nightly basis. He’s a good shot-blocker and a general presence that makes players changed their shots. Additionally, he has the ability to bring down most rebounds due to his frame. When he returns, his rebounding will be an added boost that will take stress off Carmelo Anthony who is being relied on to be the team’s main rebounder and scorer. With Chandler back, Anthony can focus on his biggest strength scoring, and rebound on the side as Chandler crashes the board with ease after almost every shot.
Even on the offensive end, Chandler is a weapon. He has his signature move of swatting missed shots out to the perimeter for the easy offensive rebound, giving the Knicks extra possessions. He also can finish alley-oops with ease. allowing for the pick and roll game to open up between Raymond Felton and himself, and most importantly, he can tip balls in for easy points on missed shots. His on the court play will be a major load of the shoulders of players such as Carmelo Anthony who are expected to do tons.
He also helps off the court on the sidelines during games and in the locker room. During his championship run in Dallas, he got the positive reputation of being a leader. He can pump players up during the half time breaks, on the sidelines during timeouts, essentially whenever and wherever he needs too. Chandler will help off the court just as much as he will on the court.
All of the Knicks problems will not be solved when Chandler returns, but his presence and play on the court will definitely help.
