New York Knicks: Mike Woodson claims he doesn't hate Iman Shumpert

One things that has been evident throughout the New York Knicks poor start is the fact that head coach Mike Woodson and guard Iman Shumpert don’t have the best relationship.

Myself and others have reported on this several times in the past as Woodson has always been highly critical of the third-year pro and Shump’s reactions towards Woodson during games doesn’t exactly embody a good working relationship between the two.

However Woodson did his best to put an end to that theory when he seemed a bit furious over the idea that he didn’t like Shumpert.

“If I didn’t like him, I don’t think he’d be averaging 30 minutes on my ballclub,’’ Woodson told Marc Berman of the New York Post. “You got to look at that. I like everybody on our team. So that perception is bulls–t, if you ask me. If I didn’t think much of the man, he wouldn’t be playing. If I don’t think much of you, you’re not going to play.”

This doesn’t prove much although I think it was a good idea by Woodson to try to pick up Shumpert’s confidence, especially after he played his worst game as a pro Monday against the Portland Trail Blazers.

It looks like the trade rumors are affecting Shump and Woodson had to do his best to try to restore confidence in him.

One thing is crystal clear though and that’s Shumpert has to be better weather Woodson loves him or hates him.

Shumpert is averaging 30.5 minutes, but he is averaging only 7.4 points per game on just 40 percent shooting.

It’s important that a coach and player are on the same page.

Hopefully Woodson and Shumpert can move forward and both guys will be better off.
