NBA Trade Rumors: Are the Knicks after Rajon Rondo?

We all know that the New York Knicks are trying to find ways to keep Carmelo Anthony in a Knicks uniform next season. To do so, they will obviously have to bring in a lot of more talent to surround him with not only for him to stay, but to be able to still compete if he still decides to enter free agency.

Recently we have all heard the reports of a possible Iman Shumpert for Kenneth Faried deal with Denver, but according to multiple sources that talk has died down a bit.

Just when we think that the Knicks are done with any trade rumors, Sunday afternoon rumors from all over the basketball world surfaced that New York is very interested in Boston Celtics point guard Rajon Rondo.

Additionally, New York has also made an offer for the All-Star point guard. The package they reportedly offered included the Knicks sending Iman Shumpert, Amar’e Stoudemire, and Raymond Felton to the Celtics for Rondo.

It also has been reported by both the New York Daily News and ESPN’s Chris Broussard report that the Celtics have no interest in the trade.

The Knicks are very open to any trade regarding Shumpert because the reality is so far they are not as good as expected and “Shump” is their best option to try to get a trade done to somehow make this team better now and for the future at the same time.

In order to get a player like Rondo, the Knicks would have to give up someone else such as Bargnani who has been playing well so it is highly unlikely that they move him. The hope is there for the fans of New York and getting a player with the talent like Rondo would be the absolute perfect piece to add to their already talented roster.

However, the trade is still unlikely because of the flaws that exist.

If New York did trade for Rondo, it is still unknown when he will be returning this season from his ACL tear last season. If the Celtics received Felton, Stoudemire, and Shumpert it would clearly not be enough especially with the level Amar’e and Felton are playing at right now.

Stoudemire is still hurt and Felton is only averaging 11.0 points, with dismal shooting, and 5.2 assists per game. Shumpert is playing exceptionally well, but he is the only player in this trade that is guaranteed to produce right now which makes this trade void.

According to Frank Isola, the “feeling around the league” is that the Knicks will deal Shumpert soon. Other possible reported trade scenarios involve the Denver Nuggets and Sacramento Kings.

The Knicks are interested in Rajon Rondo, but if he’s off the market, a trade is still possible. According to several sources, the Celtics would accept Amar’e Stoudemire and give up Courtney Lee and Gerald Wallace. Neither player really fits New York’s needs, though, and it compromises the future cap space in 2015.

Shumpert is averaging 8.3 points and 5.2 rebounds per game this season.
