NBA Trade Rumors: Celtics reportedly interested in Amar'e Stoudemire

For the better part of the last calendar year, New York Knicks fans have been begging any NBA team to take on the hefty contract of forward Amar’e Stoudemire.

Now it looks like they have a team willing to do exactly that.

ESPN’s Chris Broussard has reported that the Boston Celtics, while they won’t be moving point guard Rajon Rondo to the Knicks, would be willing to make a deal to assume the contract of Stoudemire in exchange for a bigger and longer contract such as Gerald Wallace or Courtney Lee.

Don’t get too excited as this isn’t a good move for the Knicks.

While the team would get better in the short-term with an addition such as Wallace, it would severely impact their plans to add a star next to Carmelo Anthony in the future.

Getting rid of Stoudemire’s contract would  be big for the Knicks, but considering the fact that they took on Andrea Bargnani‘s salary in the offseason and they would be taking salary back in the form of Wallace or Lee, the Knicks still wouldn’t be major players in the free agent market next season.

It would also impact them for 2015 when the Knicks are expected to be major players for top free agents, as they have already signaled out Minnesota’s Kevin Love as their top target.

Stoudemire’s deal is only partially guaranteed for next season, while both Wallace and Lee have fully guaranteed contracts until 2016.

So while it would be nice for the Knicks to unload Stoudemire’s contract, a deal with Boston for a guy like Wallace really doesn’t help them much.

It’s worth noting that the two sides are continuing to talk but any deal not involving Rondo doesn’t help the Knicks much for the future.

They have very little chance of landing Rondo, so any deal with the Celtics would simply just be a panic move for the Knicks that would hurt their future.
