New York Knicks Rumors: Knicks considered signing Jason Collins

All offseason, the New York Knicks were rumored to be signing pretty much every big man on the market.

One of those guys happened to be unrestricted free agent center Jason Collins, a player that according to ESPN’s Ian Begley, the Knicks almost signed.

Collins made news last season by becoming the first active player in one of the four major American professional team sports to announce that he is gay. He is a free agent and has yet to sign with a team.

The Knicks ultimately decided to give former lottery pick Cole Aldrich a look to fill the much needed backup center position behind Tyson Chandler, but if Aldrich doesn’t work out, Collins is a guy who the Knicks could revisit signing in the future.

“His name has come up,” Woodson said. “There are a lot of veteran guys’ names that come up. This summer we tried to mix it up a little bit with some young and then some vet guys as well.”

After going with a slew of older veterans last season like Rasheed Wallace, Kurt Thomas and Marcus Camby last season, the Knicks decided to get a bit younger this season after watching their aging core break down physically a year ago.

Collins is 34 years of age and the Knicks decided to give a look to the likes of Jeremy Tyler, 20; Cole Aldrich, 24; Ike Diogu, 30; and Josh Powell, 30.

That’s a move that makes sense, but we will find out in the next couple of weeks if one or two of the new bodies can step up and produce.

Throughout his career, Collins has averaged 3.6 points and 3.8 rebounds per game over the course of 12 NBA seasons.
