New York Knicks: Can Amar'e Stoudemire recover after lost season?

May 18, 2013; Indianapolis, IN, USA; New York Knicks power forward Amar

Amar’e Stoudemire was an All-Star with the Phoenix Suns. He was a deadly scorer, and could also rebound and get blocks. All those factors gave him a big fat contract with the New York Knicks.

In his first season in the Big Apple, he was an MVP candidate and had an outstanding year. Since then unfortunately, he has encountered a plethora of injuries that have slowed him down.

The main question here is can Amar’e return to his former greatness, or will he continue to be a shell of his former self?

The short answer is YES, Stoudemire can be a viable scoring option and can greatly help the Knicks succeed and be a good team. But that comes with a huge asterisk after it.

Stoudemire’s knees are extremely injury prone and should be treated carefully so he does not get hurt again. In order to try and stop him from getting hurt, he will be under a minutes limit that will probably push him to the bench. The minute limit will probably be around 20-25 minutes a game.

Amar’e showed us last season that he can be productive and that he is comfortable off of the bench as he averaged 14.2 points, five rebounds and shot over 50 percent from the floor in just 23.5 minutes per game.

He can replicate these stats again, but his main concern is always his health. When he went over his minute limit last season, he got hurt so he is going to have to stick at that minute limit to ensure his health.

Amar’e can still score and produce off the bench, and his health is critical for the Knicks. With him and J.R. Smith coming off the bench, that would be a deadly combo off the bench for the Knicks. Amar’e did show last season he still can be a crucial part to the team and play good.

STAT is also a fighter. Whenever he gets hurt, he is always the first one in the gym trying to recover. He is devoted to basketball and I am sure he will do anything in his power to stay healthy.  He will probably do whatever is best for him, and he showed that last year by putting his ego behind him and was open to a bench role. He will probably take a minute restriction if that keeps him healthy.

Stoudemire probably never will be the old 25 point eight rebound per game guy again, because he will not get enough minutes due. But, he can still be a dominating player who can score and make a huge impact off the bench. He just will not get enough minutes to put up huge stats. He will have to take this bench role to be healthy. If he can stay healthy he will have a big impact for the Knicks.
