New York Knicks Rumors: Knicks sign Chris Smith and Toure Murry

Mar 14, 2012; Portland, OR, USA : Wichita State Shockers guard Toure

The New York Knicks picked up a couple of additions this week but it was not the type of additions we expected them to pick up.

The Knicks signed Summer League stars, Chris Smith and Toure Murry to non-guaranteed contracts to bolster the Knicks backcourt but in reality, they should be looking to pick up big men to boost their frontcourt.

Smith, the younger brother of Knicks’ guard J.R. Smith, played for the Knicks in the summer league team in Las Vegas this year. Smith (6-2, 195 pounds) averaged only 5.0 points and 1.8 assists per game.

He is not expected to make the Knicks’ roster, which now has 15 players.  Smith, who helped Louisville reach the 2012 Final Four, was on the Knicks’ roster in the preseason last year before getting hurt and waived before the regular season.

The other addition is another point guard in Murry, who you may recognize him from the Knicks Summer League team.

Murry ran the point for the majority of the Knicks disappointing Vegas Summer League campaign but with Raymond Felton, Pablo Prigioni, and Beno Udrih on the Knicks roster; it came as a surprise that the Knicks picked him up. He is obviously going to have a hard time breaking into the Knicks roster.

Both players have talent and could have potential futures with the franchise but it seems unlikely that either will make the roster with the Knicks already looking like they have an established backcourt rotation.

If any of these players deserve to make the roster its Murry.

Murry is a player that is a lot like Knicks legend Walt Clyde Frazier (no he is nowhere close to the level or have the potential to become that level), but is a pass first point guard that can space the floor with his wide array shots.

He is capable of making the bench unit seem even better than what they are and could make the Knicks roster only on the basis that he can distribute like Prigioni.
