New York Knicks: Does J.R. Smith's comments help or hurt Knicks?

A war has officially begun in the new “Battle of New York”. Earlier this month, Brooklyn Nets forward Paul Pierce sparked a battle between the Nets and the New York Knicks.

“Everybody knows how much I disliked the Knicks when I was with the Celtics, but I think it’s grown to another level,” Pierce said on ESPN New York 98.7 FM’s “The Michael Kay Show.” “I think it’s time for the Nets to start running this city.” – Paul Pierce

J.R. Smith became the first player to retaliate to the comments from Pierce with the following statement:

“I just look at him as a bitter person just getting out of Boston. He doesn’t really know what New York is all about. He’s been playing in Boston his whole career. He just knows, just know that his words have consequences and he’s going to have to pay for them.” – J.R. Smith

Personally as a fan of the Knicks organization, this whole “war of words” is really good for both teams coming into the season. With both teams being competitive, the matchup between these two teams will now be even more extravagant and will have all of the fans on their toes.

These kind of comments are good for basketball in my mind, because all it does it make things more interesting and basically shows that there are players out there still that actually want to win and aren’t just on the floor for a paycheck.

It is admirable that Smith is so confident with this Knicks ball club and we all know that he may take it a little overboard sometimes.

Whether it’s him tweeting to players or officials or in interviews Smith wants to make his voice be heard. That is why Smith is one of the most exciting players in the league to see play not only because of his trash talking antics, but you never know what to expect from him.

However, these kind of comments could possibly get him into some trouble because some people may took what J.R. said out of context and took it as a threat to Pierce.

As for the title promise tweet, that may have just been a comment to attempt to get into the Nets and/or Pierce’s head.

Knowing that the Nets organization would either read or hear through the grapevine about the tweet, Smith may have accomplished exactly what he wanted to do.

The Knicks may have not won a championship in 40 years, but that will not stop Smith from having confidence in his teammates and that is what many fans love about him-simply his enthusiasm for the sport alone is enough to love the guy.

Love him or hate him, he will give you a reason to watch Knicks basketball.
