New York Knicks Rumors: Chris Smith invited to training camp

Even though we heard on a couple of different occasions that the younger brother of J.R. Smith would not be among those invited to training camp, we all knew that before it was all said and done that Chris Smith would indeed be among those in uniform when the New York Knicks report to camp.

ESPN’s Ian Begley reported the news on the younger Smith, as the former Louisville product becomes the 15th invite to training camp.

Smith went undrafted out of Louisville in 2012 and played on the Knicks’ summer league team last July but underwent patella tendon surgery in October. He also played for the Knicks’ summer league team this past summer.

He’s a guy that’s just using his connections to get an invite to an NBA camp for the second year and I guess there isn’t anything wrong with that, but if we leaned anything from the younger Smith from his pair of Summer League seasons and training camp last year, it is the fact that he is nowhere close to being an NBA-caliber guard.

Smith didn’t distinguish himself or separate himself from others when he was given the chance to play in the past, so I would be shocked if he is given a chance to compete for a roster spot.

As it stands right now, with 12 guaranteed contracts and two partially guaranteed contracts on the team, it would take something insane in training camp for Smith to get a chance at the 15th roster spot. His best chance right now is the hope that the Knicks front office shows him some favoritism, which is something that is unlikely, but also something you can’t put past the Knicks front office.

If that is the case, I wouldn’t be surprised to see them announce the signing of Smith’s father, Earl Sr., to complete the Smith trifecta.
