New York Knicks Rumors: Knicks, Earl Barron have mutual interest

As the New York Knicks continue their search to add the missing piece for the 2013-14 team, their search has landed on a familiar face.

The Knicks and free agent center Earl Barron have mutual interest in reuniting, reports Jared Zwerling of ESPN New York, who cites a source close to Barron.

“He wants to be back in New York. There has been a lot of interest, and that’s with them and with them to us,” Zwerling’s source said source said. “I think it’s just going to be one of those wait situations, where I think the signing of Jeremy Tyler didn’t really knock [Barron] out of it, but it slowed the process up for him for sure.”

“But Earl wants to be a Knick. He’s waiting for the Knicks to pull the trigger. He thinks that the Knicks will have a chance to win a championship, and he wants to be a part of it.”

Barron spent a brief amount of time with New York late last season, appearing in only one game, and also played with the team in 2009/10.  He has played for six other NBA teams, including the Wizards early last season.

However his best NBA moments have come wearing a Knicks’ jersey as something positive always seems to happen when he steps on the court.

During the 2009-10 season, Barron averaged career highs with 11.0 points and 11.7 rebounds per game, though it was only for a seven-game stretch. Then during his one game in blue and orange a season ago, the 32-year old scored 11 points and grabbed 18 boards. It wasn’t against great competition, but it was still yet another positive result for Barron.

Barron could help one major weakness of the Knicks and that is rebounding and while he doesn’t have a polished offensive game, he should be capable enough to give Tyson Chandler a break every now and again.

The source said five other NBA teams have invited Barron to training camp this fall, but the Knicks remain the priority. In fact, both sides have met “a couple of times already” this summer, according to the source.
