New York Knicks Rumors: Knicks Meeting With Hamed Haddadi

The New York Knicks are still in search of adding another player before training camp, most likely a big man.

That search could end rather quickly though as there have bee reports that the Knicks have had meetings with unrestricted free agent Hamed Haddadi.

The Knicks have been linked to Haddadi for several weeks now and it looks as if the two sides could be close on an agreement. The Knicks met with the Iranian center on Friday, according to Frank Isola of the New York Daily News.

Haddadi could provide the Knicks with some needed frontcourt depth and would come at the league minimum, which is all the Knicks can offer any player at this point.

He finished last season strong after coming over from the Toronto Raptors at the deadline as he averaged 4.1 points and 5.1 rebounds in 13.8 minutes per game for the Phoenix Suns.  The big man had a partially-guaranteed deal with the Suns for this season but Phoenix opted to cut him loose for $200K this summer rather than pay him $1.4 million for the season.

Haddadi boasts career averages of only 2.2 points and 2.5 rebounds per game in only seven minutes per contest. His per 36 minutes numbers are a bit more respectable at 11.6 points and 12.6 rebounds.

However I’m not too thrilled about the idea, especially with a guy like Earl Barron and a few other options still on the market.

Although Haddadi can impact the game around the rim, as his per 36 numbers would indicate, he struggles big time to get up and down the floor, which should be a major concern.

Then there is the fact that defensively he can only impact the game in a short zone around the basket area, which means he can’t be asked to defend mobile bigs, or three-point shooters, or pick-and-rolls, or teams that runs, etc. He can give you about five minutes of time if he is used in the right situation, but that is about it.

The nicks need another big to help take some pressure of Tyson Chandler and potentially limit his minutes at certain points of the season.

Unfortunately that guy is not Haddadi.

Whoever the Knicks sign doesn’t have to play a lot, but it would be nice if they were useful when they did.

I simply just don’t see potentially signing Haddadi as a good fit.
