New York Knicks Rumors: Knicks showing interest in Delonte West

The New York Knicks are still in search of another guard for the 2013-14 season and now it appears that you can throw a familiar name into the mix.

The Knicks and Memphis Grizzlies have engaged in talks about potentially signing free agent guard Delonte West, a source tells Chris Haynes of CSNNW.com. Neither team has made an offer as of yet and while talks may be in the preliminary stages at the moment, Haynes also notes that they are beginning to become serious.

After the trade deadline passed last season, the Knicks considered signing West to add some depth to their backcourt. It looks as if they could be revisiting that thought now.

West didn’t play in the NBA last season after his behavior in Dallas Mavericks training camp prompted the team to cut him.

He eventually signed with the D-League’s Texas Legends, but it took him several weeks to report to the team, and he averaged just 10.3 points and 4.4 assists in eight games with the squad.

Potentially signing West has a few positives attached to it.

He can pay either guard spot and would a solid third point guard, which is the Knicks biggest need at the moment. He can also guard multiple positions, which should make him a favorite of Knicks’ head coach Mike Woodson. Then there is the fact that he should come cheap. Given his past, there is no way that he gets more than a minimum contract, which is all the Knicks can offer.

However it is likely West’s negatives outweigh the positives.

If you sign West, you get all of the baggage that comes along with him, and it is a ton of baggage.

With a locker room that already features eccentric personalities such as J.R. Smith and Metta World Peace, who is going to keep all of these guys in line?

With the goal of winning a championship fresh in mind, the last thing the Knicks need is to deal with more off the court distractions than they already have.

Does West deserve another shot in the NBA? That’s likely, but it shouldn’t be in New York as there are a lot of better options out there to add depth to the backcourt.
