New York Knicks Rumors: Why the Knicks should stay away from Josh Childress

Believe it or not but Josh Childress, once upon a time was a contributing role player on an NBA team. During his first four seasons in Atlanta, Childress averaged 11.22 ppg and then it all went downhill in Phoenix and Brooklyn where over the course of three seasons Childress could only muster up 2.96 ppg.

If the New York Knicks were to sign Childress as a player to backup Carmelo Anthony, as it is rumored the two sides are talking about a contract, it would be poison to the team. Not only is Childress one of the worst passers in the game, he would not be able to space the floor for the Knicks big second unit. Childress is a poor rebounder, poor defender, and at the age of 30, it seems that even Mike Miller is capable of driving to the rim against Childress.

Having three point shooters off the bench is a necessity and with Childress not having the ability to score from behind the arc he would be a offensive and defensive liability.

The Knicks would be smarter to look at a player like Shawne Williams who can shoot the three ball, can drive, and isn’t a liability on the defensive end of the game.

Last season, when Childress was playing across the river, may be the biggest indication of why the Knicks shouldn’t sign him.

Childress, 30, shot a horrendous 28 percent from the field and with the Knicks needing an upgrade on the defensive side of the game, he is liability in that category as well. It seems like an unnecessary move for the Knicks when players such as Shawne Williams, Dahntay Jones, Metta World Peace (potentially), Wesley Johnson,  and Mickael Pietrus all still on the board.

With that being said, it seems almost idiotic for the Knicks front office to even be considering Childress as a potential option.

If the Knicks go out and seek out a wing player to help out Anthony, they are better off looking at defensive minded wing players, as Anthony is an offensive minded player, who can spread the floor and shoot the three.

With the Knicks only having $1.75 million of their mini mid level exception left, and only veteran minimum contracts to offer besides that, it may seem a hard job to accomplish but there are still many underrated wings who are available for a low price and no, Childress is not one, and shouldn’t even be considered as one of them.
