New York Knicks Rumors: Why Signing Jose Calderon Should Be a Knicks Top Priority

NBA Free Agency is in full force and there are new rumors every hour. The market hasn’t been set yet for role players and average players, so you are going to hear a lot of different players going places until there are some offers on the table to see who can afford who.

One player that the New York Knicks can possibly steal off the market is the eight-year veteran point guard from Spain, Jose Calderon.

Calderon is one of the best passers in the NBA, averaging over seven assists a game while playing for the Toronto Raptors, a team not known for winning. Before getting traded to the Detroit Pistons in the three-team Rudy Gay trade, Calderon posted 8.8 & 8.9 assists over the last two seasons.

He has a knack for finding the open man and creating scoring chances for his teammates, something the Knicks lacked at times last season.

The backcourt for the Knicks currently consist of Raymond Felton, Iman Shumpert, & rookie Tim Hardaway Jr. Felton played well last season but fell apart in the playoffs against the Pacers, Shumpert has to show he can stay healthy for an entire 82 game season plus playoffs, and Hardaway is obviously unproven at this level. We all know where Jason Kidd went and Pablo Prigioni’s future with the team is up and the air.

The kicker is that the Knicks can offer Calderon only the $3 million mini mid-level exception.

I think Calderon is worth more than that and will probably get a higher offer, but playing with the Knicks might intrigue him to take less to play under the bright lights and go for a championship run.

Mike Woodson showed last season he has no problem playing two point guards at the same time, he mixed Felton, Prigioni, & Kidd all the time. Calderon is a much better player than Prigioni and Kidd and is probably a better natural point guard than Felton is.

Calderon has never played with a player like Carmelo Anthony and it might give him the best chance to win and get national exposure.

If Calderon and the Knicks can agree to a deal, I think it’s a no-brainer.
