NBA Summer League: Knicks Summer League Preview

Tony Mitchell

Tony Mitchell could be a player to look out for in this years Summer League for the Knicks.

With there no basketball being played at the moment, the NBA Summer League can’t begin soon enough.

After a summer league that ended with no wins last season mainly because of the lack of draft picks, it seems that the New York Knicks have more than renewed themselves this offseason with the team their putting up.

The Knicks have set out a roster, which is quite impressive as it includes: Tim Hardaway Jr., C.J. Leslie, A.J. Mathews, Jerome Jordan, Tony Mitchell (Alabama & D-League), Toure Murry (Wichita State & D-League), Chris Smith, and most notably, Iman Shumpert.

The Knicks have also sent out invites to attractive young big man, Henry Sims. Sims is a great prospect and could definitely be regarded as a player who has a chance to make the Knicks’ regular season roster.

Some players who are in contention for the Knicks’ MVP of the Summer League are Shumpert, Hardaway Jr., Leslie, Jordan, and to a lot of peoples surprise, Mitchell.

Most people would not be expecting to see Mitchell on this list,  and he is not the Tony Mitchell the Knicks had interest in during the draft, but this young player has shown a great deal of potential during his days at Alabama and most recently, the D-League.

Mitchell, 23, averaged 22.2 ppg, 6.4 rpg, 2.7 apg, and 1.4 spg. and really shone during his time last season in the D-League. This will really be a test of his abilities as he has the opportunity to open up some eyes and possibly ear an invite to training camp. Mitchell has elite physical tools and should be regarded as a player who shouldn’t be written off before the league has seen him play against NBA quality opposition.

The Knicks’ first two games are against New Orleans and Washington, which should be great games to watch with both of those teams have great teams. Ultimately, I believe, as many expect, Shumpert to be the MVP for the Knicks in this year’s Summer League.

Shumpert is close to being an elite player in the NBA but in this year’s Summer League, Shumpert is the LeBron James.

The Knicks front office should be in store for some tough decisions this offseason as the Knicks have some holes to fill and they could choose to go through a safer but expensive route, which is free agency, or the Knicks could take a risk with a boom or bust player such as Jordan.

Knicks fans should be in store for a great Summer League this year after many years of disappointing teams that the Knicks have sent out for past Summer Leagues.
