New York Knicks Rumors: Why Signing Tony Allen would be a bad move

The New York Knicks appear to be interested in Memphis Grizzlies guard Tony Allen and it would not be the smartest move Knicks’ general manager Glen Grunwald ever made if the Knicks were to sign the veteran.

Allen is essentially a one dimensional player. He is a lockdown defender but it essentially ends there.

I understand that a lot of teams need lockdown defenders at the 2, but the Knicks already have an elite defensive talent in Iman Shumpert, who is more than capable of shutting down players such as Dwayne Wade or Kobe Bryant.

The Knicks main source of scoring last season was from behind the arc, where most of the position players were solid shooters (not including centers).

Allen was horrendous from behind the arc shooting an abysmal 12 percent, which will not benefit the Knicks in the long run. He is also 31 years old and even if you are known for being a lockdown defender, once players reach 30 years old, they’re defense starts to decline and younger shooting guards such as Eric Gordon or Tyreke Evans don’t have as much trouble getting past them.

The Knicks would be foolish to offer Allen anything above a one-year deal for a veterans minimum because that is all he is really worth right now. If he was three years younger, then offering their MLE would seem right but let’s not think hypothetically as of right now.

Allen brings a veteran presence to the Knicks locker room with a heap of playoff experience but as of right now that would be all that he would be bringing and for the Knicks to pay him their mini mid-level exception it would be foolish with the veterans they already have on the team.

He would also not be called on to play that many minutes with Mike Woodson more likely to play a strong offensive presence such as J.R. Smith, or Tim Hardaway Jr. at the two guard.

Signing Allen would be a waste of what the Knicks have to offer this offseason and they should be looking at getting a more solid point guard or looking at a player to boost the front court rotation with their mini mid-level exception.
