New York Knicks Rumors: Could Shawne Williams return to the Big Apple?

As the New York Knicks prepare to look at cheap alternatives to fill out their roster for the 2013-14 season, could they be looking at a familiar face?

According to Marc Berman of the New York Post, former Knick Shawne Williams will return to New York on Monday to work out and audition for a spot on next season’s team.

“Shawne loved his time there,’’ his agent Happy Walters told Berman. “He’ll be the first to tell you. But it is also about where he’d get playing time.’’

The Knicks would be wise to add some more scoring from the small forward spot. With Carmelo Anthony likely to remain at the power forward position, the Knicks get very little production from the 3 spot.

Williams has had personal troubles in recent years but thrived in New York during the 2010-11 campaign, averaging 7.1 points and 3.7 rebounds in 20.7 minutes per contest.  His last NBA season was in 2011-12 with the Brooklyn Nets, where he had plenty of struggles.

With the Knicks though, Williams proved to be a guy who come off of the bench and bring energy and knock down a few jumpers. But more importantly he could defend both forward positions well, which should make him intriguing to Knicks head coach Mike Woodson.

If the Knicks were interested in Williams, he could fill Chris Copeland’s shoes, as the Knicks likely won’t be able to re-sign Copeland. Williams won’t bring near the scoring punch that Copeland did. But he is a much better defender and could carve out a decent role with this Knicks team.

However there will be a lot of competition for Williams’ services.

The Los Angeles Clippers and Chicago Bulls reportedly have shown interest, but so has the Los Angeles Lakers, where Mike D’Antoni is the head coach. Williams had his best success in the NBA under D’Antoni, so I’m sure the Lakers situation is more than a bit intriguing for him.
