New York Knicks Rumors: Are the Knicks moving up in the first round?

With the New York Knicks needing to hit a home run with their first round selection in the 2013 NBA Draft, they may be prepared to attempt to land an even better player that may have fallen to them with the No. 24 overall pick.

With eight days until draft day, there appears to be a good chance that Knicks general manager Glen Grunwald may try and move into the lottery.

It has long been rumored that the Dallas Mavericks will attempt to trade their first-round pick- No. 13 overall- and according to ESPN’s Chad Ford, the Knicks are one of three teams that have shown interest in moving up.

Ford says the price of acquiring the Mavericks pick would be a 2014 first-round pick or taking back Shawn Marion in the deal.

Of course those are two things the Knicks likely couldn’t do.

Their 2014 first-round pick was traded to the Denver Nuggets as part of the Carmelo Anthony deal and they are already so far over the cap that taking on Marion’s $9.3 million salary for next season seems almost impossible.

It makes sense for the Mavs to deal the pick as they are trying to create enough cap room to target either Dwight Howard or Chris Paul.

But while it does make sense for the Knicks to move up and try and grab a guy who can contribute immediately, once again their salary cap problems could likely prevent them from doing so.

If the Knicks do find a way to move up in the draft, it is unclear who they would target at No. 13, although Miami point guard Shane Larkin would be a realistic option for them.

Ford adds that some teams believe the Mavs may already have a deal in place and that the Cleveland Cavaliers and Oklahoma City Thunder are also in the mix to acquire the pick.
