New York Knicks Rumors: Murray State PG Isaiah Canaan to work out for Knicks

It’s not much secret that the New York Knicks will be targeting a point guard with the No. 24 overall selection in June’s NBA Draft.

The question though is who will be available when the Knicks select?

I documented last week the Knicks interest in Miami point guard Shane Larkin. But as Larking continues to rise up draft boards, it seems less likely that he will be around when the Knicks pick. The same can be said for Germany’s Dennis Schroeder, who is also likely to be off the board when the Knicks come on the clock.

That brings us to the next tier of point guards and one man particular should peak the Knicks interest- Murray State’s Isaiah Canaan.

The Knicks have shown some interest in Canaan as of late and according to Charles F. Gardner of the Journal Sentinel, the Knicks are one of several teams to have scheduled a workout with the Murray State product.

Gardner reports that Canaan was very impressive in a recent workout for the Milwaukee Bucks and it is no surprise watching him play collegiately.

Canaan won’t be a lottery pick but certainly has first-round talent.

Considering the fact that he is coming from a small college, it is hard not to draw comparisons to last year’s Rookie of the Year Damian Lillard.

In college, Canaan put up big scoring numbers similar to Lillard.  He played four years at Murray State and averaged 21.8 points as a senior. Currently he is projected as a late first round to early second round.

He would be an excellent fit with the Knicks as he is not only a very good scorer, but an efficient one as he shot over 45 percent from the floor during his four-year college career. In terms of shooting the ball, he is an excellent shooter with deep range, knocking down 43 percent of his attempts from behind the arc in college.

Canaan also possesses great speed and quickness and is a strong physical guard who won’t have any problems getting to the basket.

In terms of workouts, Canaan had a standout performance last summer at the Nike LeBron James Skills Academy against most of the top young point guards in the country and held his own in Chicago at the NBA Combine.

Before the playoffs began I had Canaan going to the Knicks in one of my mocks, so I wouldn’t be against the team selecting him if he were available.

The 22-year-old Canaan has also worked out for San Antonio. In addition to the Knicks, he has more workouts scheduled with Indiana, Cleveland, Phoenix, Dallas and Utah.
