2013 NBA Awards: Pacers' Paul George wins Most Improved Player Award

The 2013 NBA Awards keep rolling in.

After the New York Knicks J.R. Smith was named Sixth Man of the Year and the Memphis Grizzlies Marc Gasol captured the Defensive Player of the Year, it was Paul George’s time to capture some hardware.

The NBA announced on Tuesday that the Indiana Pacers forward has been named the leagues Most Improved Player.

It’s a well-deserved honor for George.

As a rookie in 2010-11 he earned All-Rookie Second Team honors, averaging 7.8 points in 20.7 minutes per game.

George became a full-time starter last season, starting all 66 games for the Pacers and increased his production to 12.1 points, 5.6 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 1.6 steals in 29.7 minutes. He was very inconsistent at times, but showed small glimpses of becoming a star.

This year George showed the world that he is a legitimate All-Star.

George became the Pacers primary offensive option with Danny Granger out for most of the season and responded by averaging 17.4 points, 7.6 rebounds, 4.1 assists and 1.8 steals per contest.

He wasn’t as efficient as a year ago as his shooting percentage dropped slightly, but he led the Pacers to the No. 3 seed in the Eastern Conference and made his first career All-Star team.

The voting totals have not been released yet, but George beat out the likes of Larry Sanders, Greivis Vasquez, Omer Asik and several other players to win his first major individual award.
