Carmelo Anthony named Eastern Conference Player of the Month

As the 2013 NBA Playoffs get set to begin, New York Knicks’ superstar Carmelo Anthony can add yet another honor to what turned out to be a fantastic 2012-13 regular season.

The NBA announced on Friday that Anthony was named the Eastern Conference Player of the Month for April.

Anthony nearly averaged a double-double (36.9 points, 9.9 rebounds per game) during the month as the Knicks went 8-2.

His big month also helped him capture his first scoring title in his 10-year career, outdoing Kevin Durant 28.7 points per game to 28.1.

Anthony winning the player of the month for the month of April means it is the first month of season  that Miami’s LeBron James didn’t capture the award.

In addition to Anthony winning player of the month, another Knick- rookie Chris Copeland- received an honor of his own.

Copeland, who saw a bigger role in the month of April due to injuries up and down the Knicks roster, was named the Eastern Conference Rookie of the Month.

The 29-year old rookie ranked fourth among all rookies in scoring (15 points per game) and fourth in 3-point field goal percentage (.452) during the month of April, closing it with back-to-back career highs with 32 and 33 points respectively.

With Pablo Prigioni doubtful for Game 1 against the Boston Celtics, Copeland could find himself in the starting lineup Saturday afternoon.

Either way, hopefully the hot streaks of Anthony and Copeland continue into the month of May and beyond as the Knicks will need a lot from both guys to make a lengthy playoff run.
