Carmelo Anthony wins first career NBA scoring title

There’s not much drama surrounding the end of the regular season for the New York Knicks, but as the season winds down, it will do so with Carmelo Anthony atop of the NBA scoring list.

Anthony will join Tyson Chandler, Kenyon Martin and plenty of other Knicks players who will sit out the regular season finale at The Garden against the Atlanta Hawks.

However Oklahoma City’s Kevin Durant will also sit out the Thunder’s finale Wednesday night against the Milwaukee Bucks, ensuring the fact that Anthony will win the scoring title.

Even if Durant would have played, it was a forgone conclusion that Anthony would win the scoring championship as Durant would have had to score 70 points to unseat ‘Melo, but stranger things have happened.

‘Melo wins his first career scoring title by finishing with a 28.7 points per game average, besting Durant, who finished at 28.1.

The Los Angeles Lakers Kobe Bryant finished third with a 27.3 average.

Winning the scoring title is quite the feat for Anthony, who overtook Durant with an outstanding 15-game stretch to close the season.

During the final seven games in March, Anthony averaged 27.8 points per game, but he really took control of the scoring race by averaging a whopping 36.9 points in eight April contests.

When the playoffs begin, Anthony wouldn’t have played a game in eight days due to resting a sore shoulder. Hopefully for the sake of Knicks fans, Anthony will be able to pick right up where he left off.

Anthony winning the scoring championship breaks a three-year hold that Durant has had on the scoring title and he also becomes the first Knicks player to capture the honor since Bernard King did so during the 1984-85 season.
