Kenyon Martin: Making the Case for K-Mart to Stay in the Staritng Lineup

With the absence of Amar’e Stoudemire and Tyson Chandler, Mike Woodson has asked Kenyon Martin to step up his game. The 35-year old former No. 1 overall pick has responded greatly and has been a perfect fit for this Knicks team.

Since Chandler went down on that awful night in Denver, K-Mart as stepped in and started the last seven games.

The Knicks are 5-2 since then, rolling off five straight victories. With 18 and 19 points scored against the Toronto Raptors on back-to-back nights, Martin is showing he deserves to stay in the starting lineup for the rest of the season.

Martin has been all attitude and heart ever since he came in to the league. Growing up in New York and during the Nets’ Finals runs, I’ve seen firsthand what K-Mart is capable of doing. That might have been nearly a decade ago, but age doesn’t wear down your determination and heart on the court.

He will get into foul trouble due to his aggressive defensive style but you have to love how he plays on the defensive side of the ball. When Chandler is healthy, Martin and Chandler are going to have players think twice before driving into the paint.

Martin’s point totals have increased every game since he has been inserted into the starting lineup. Knicks fans can’t be expecting Martin to put up 20 and 10 night in and night out, but consistency and minutes is what we are asking for.

As long as he is playing consistent, with passion, and shows flashes of the old Kenyon Martin, there’s no reason why Mike Woodson would take him out of the starting lineup.
