New York Knicks will sink or swim with what they have

After a very quiet trade deadline from the New York Knicks, general manager Glen Grunwald has decided that this is the team that we will see from here on out for the remainder of the season. I don’t blame him for not blowing up this team that currently sits second place in the East, but with their recent play, it would have been nice to see a piece or two added.

I fully support the decision of not trading Iman Shumpert. Shump is the youngest Knick and a big piece for the future. For this season they might have needed one more proven veteran who they can count on at playoff time, but I have full faith in Shumpert’s abilities. He is coming off major knee surgery and is still only in his second career season. He has 73 career games played and only 14 this season. When he gets his legs back under him, Mike Woodson will rely on is “Rook” to be the defensive stopper for the likes of Dwyane Wade, Derrick Rose, Paul George, and Joe Johnson come playoff time.

The addition of Kenyon Martin cannot be judged until his 10 days are up and if Grunwald decides to sign him for the remainder of the season. With Marcus Camby and Rasheed Wallace never consistently being on the court, Martin will have to be the big man of the bench that provides a spark and toughness. He has played well with Carmelo Anthony and J.R. Smith in the past, so hopefully it works out.

Two years ago today (February 22nd) the Knicks made the trade that will change their franchise forever. They got their guy in Carmelo Anthony and have been invested in him in making a championship run ever since. This is the team that will sink or swim. No other big names will be brought into New York as long as Carmelo is here. This is his team and his time. This is the roster that will determine how far the Knicks will go.
