New York Knicks sign Kenyon Martin to 10-Day contract

The New York Knicks did not make a trade to improve their team for the stretch run at the deadline, but they were able to add a piece nonetheless.

After months of rumors linking  free agent forward Kenyon Martin to the Knicks, Yahoo! Sports’ Marcus J. Spears has reported that the team has signed the former No. 1 overall pick to a 10-day contract.

Martin fills a void as a backup big man since both Rasheed Wallace and Marcus Camby have been out of the lineup with injuries.

K-Mart last played for the Los Angeles Clippers last season, but has expressed his desire to sign with the Knicks as he has a close relationship with both Carmelo Anthony and J.R. Smith from their days with the Denver Nuggets.

Martin is a shell of his former self and who knows if he is even in playing shape, but one would think the Knicks would not have reached out to him if he weren’t.

The Knicks may have rushed to sign Martin as it was reported earlier in the day that his agent was in contact with the Miami Heat.

Martin averaged only 5.2 points and 4.3 rebounds in 22.4 minutes per game last season with the Clippers, but he should add a defensive presence and a bit of toughness that is currently missing from the Knicks lineup.

He isn’t exactly the backup center the Knicks could use, but Martin’s big body could help what is currently a very thin frontline.
