New York Knicks Rumors: Knicks considering Martin, Amundson

As the trade deadline approaches, many want to see exactly how New York Knicks’ general manager Glen Grunwald will improve this team for the stretch run.

There have been a few trade rumors pop up recently involving the Knicks, but the option to sign a free agent is still out there.

When you mention the words free agent as it associates with the Knicks, the first name that comes to mind is Kenyon Martin, who has been linked to the Knicks all season.

That is the case once again as Alex Kennedy of HoopsWorld reports that the Knicks have had internal discussions about possibly going after Kenyon Martin or Louis Amundson.

That all stems from the fact that both Rasheed Wallace and Marcus Camby are still out with injuries and the Knicks need frontcourt depth badly.

Knicks’ head coach Mike Woodson  has said repeatedly that ‘Sheed would return sometime after the All-Star break, but Kennedy notes that internally there appears to be some doubt about just how effective he’ll be.

Currently with 15 guaranteed contracts, the Knicks would have to release someone and eat the money or find a way to create a roster spot via trade in order to sign a free agent.

If they stand pat at the trade deadline, Kennedy thinks that New York will wait and see just how productive Wallace will be once he re-joins the lineup before determining whether or not they will look to sign Martin or Amundson for the remainder of the season.

Amundson has drawn interest from both the Philadelphia 76ers and Los Angeles Lakers, who both are below the maximum 15 players and wouldn’t have to make a move in order to sign him.

There is no market for Martin, who hasn’t been linked to any other team except the Knicks all season.

Teams have until April 17 to sign free agents.
