Iman Shumpert ready for minutes increase

There wasn’t much good news that came from Monday’s loss to the Brooklyn Nets.

But despite the Nets pulling within a game of the New York Knicks in the Atlantic Division, Knicks’ guard Iman Shumpert’s knee looked pretty good for a second consecutive game.

Shumpert played 15 minutes in his debut in London against the Detroit Pistons and that was upped to 20 minutes Monday against the Nets.

If Shumpert gets through the Knicks next stretch that features three games in four days without any setbacks, it’s quite possible he could be playing 25-30 minutes before long.

Unfortunately Shump is still on a minutes limit and Knicks’ head coach Mike Woodson had to use Shumpert in four, five-minute stretches against the Nets. Hopefully in about week, Shumpert’s knee will be healthy enough to play him in longer stretches.

When it is, it is great news for the Knicks as Woodson will be able to use their best and most versatile defender in different roles.

Shumpert will draw the opposing teams best offensive player the rest of the season and Woodson won’t hesitate to match him up on positions 1-4 at any given time. Once his knee is at full strength, it will be nice to see him used in different ways defensively for about 30 minutes a night.

That won’t happen for likely a couple of weeks, but the good news is that Shumpert has already seen an increase in minutes just two games into his season and that he looks good and healthy. Once he is deemed 100 percent, it will be interesting to see exactly how much Shump’s minutes will really increase.
