Marcus Camby Doubtful for Opener

It looks as if the second stint in a New York Knicks uniform is beginning the way the first stint ended for Marcus Camby- marred by injury.

Camby, who was signed to a three-year deal in the offseason has been out of action since the fourth day of training camp due to a strained calf, is likely to not be ready for the Knicks season opener, according to Knicks’ head coach Mike Woodson.

“Don’t know. That I don’t know,’’ said Woodson. “With the Marcus injury, we’re going to take it slow. This thing can become a nagging problem the rest of the season.’’

If Camby manages to suit up, he will have missed the entire preseason schedule, which that concludes tomorrow against the Nets at Nassau Coliseum. Camby, 38, made the road trip to be with teammates and continue treatment. He said last week he expected to play the season opener.

Amar’e Stoudemire will miss two to three weeks, possibly the season’s first five games, with a ruptured cyst behind his left knee, so having Camby available will be big for the Knicks, but even if that’s the case, Camby will need some time to get into playing shape.

Camby was scheduled to return to practice today, which is good news.

Injuries were to be expected with such an aging team, but the rash of injuries that have hit the Knicks already has been a bit ridiculous.

Thank God it’s exhibition season and not the regular season,” Woodson told Marc Berman of the New York Post.

If Camby can get through a practice without further setbacks, time will tell how quickly he can catch up to his teammates, as he’s expected to play a big ole off the bench this season.
