Carmelo Anthony is a very versatile player and even though he can play many roles on the team, Anthony prefers to stay at the small forward position.
There has been talk that the Knicks would be open to playing Anthony at the four (power forward position) at certain times of the season, but it seems as though Anthony is not comfortable doing that. Even though Anthony played the position during the Olympics, the role is quite different in the NBA game.
Anthony spoke to ESPN New York and he discussed his preference to stay at the small forward slot.
“Right now, we have guys in that position. We want to keep it like that,” Anthony said Monday when asked about playing more power forward this year. “I’d rather play my natural position then go down there and play the 4, the 5 and things that I don’t really want to do. So with the guys that we have now, I find that we’re definitely that much more effective.”
There is no question Anthony would find success as a power forward, but at the end of the day, his natural role is at the three. That position allows Anthony to both score and create for his teammates. Anthony is one of the best pure scorers in the league and since he is working on other aspects of his game, the Knicks can expect great things from him at that position.
The Knicks already have players lined up at the power forward spot, so it will be tough for Anthony to take their minutes. There may be times when Mike Woodson will play small at put Anthony at the four, but for the most part, Anthony will remain the Knicks’ small forward.
