New York Knicks Still After Kenyon Martin

The New York Knicks are still looking for a backup power forward and although we’ve seen about 10 different players linked to them at different times; it looks as if the search is right back where it started, with Kenyon Martin.

May 15, 2012; San Antonio, Texas, USA; Los Angeles Clippers guard Mo Williams (25) is helped off the floor by teammate Kenyon Martin (2) during the first half in game one of the Western Conference semifinals of the 2012 NBA Playoffs against the San Antonio Spurs at the AT

ESPN’s Marc Stein reports that the Knicks still rate Martin as the free agent they would like to have, but there’s one problem- the Knicks have yet to sell K-Mart on playing for the veteran’s minimum.

The Celtics and Lakers are among the other teams that have shown interest in the forward, but just like the Knicks, they won’t offer more than $1.35MM.

The former No. 1 overall pick hooked on with the Clippers mid-season last year for the team’s full room exception of $2.5MM.  But while the 34-year-old offered toughness to the Los Angeles frontcourt, he averaged just 5.2 PPG and 4.3 RPG.  It’s quite possible that those career-low numbers hurt the veteran’s value heading into this offseason.

Martin could wait until training camp begins and hope a void is created on a team due to injury, but it’s very doubtful he will get the money he is seeking.

The general feeling is that if Martin wants to continue to have an NBA career, he may have to settle for the veteran’s minimum, which means the Knicks are still in the running.
