Patrick Ewing Turns Down Knicks Offer

The New York Knicks and legend Patrick Ewing have always seemed like the perfect match for each other and many have hoped that Ewing would one day return to the organization in one capacity or another.

Little did anyone know that Ewing wouldn’t be interested in a reunion.

The Hall of Fame center has long been in search of his first NBA head coaching opportunity, but so far, no NBA team has come calling. Ewing spent the past few seasons in Orlando as an assistant, but was let go shortly after Stan Van Gundy was let go by the Magic.

Currently unemployed, the Knicks reached out to Ewing and offered him the opportunity to coach their D-League team, the Erie BayHawks.

However Ewing turned down the offer, preferring to stay in the NBA.

A source close to Ewing, told ESPN’s Ian Begley said the Hall of Famer felt a bit slighted by the Knicks’ offer to coach the Erie Bayhawks because he has already established himself in the NBA.

“Patrick has paid his dues,” the source said. “He was a little insulted.”

The Knicks have had several coaching staff openings since Ewing began coaching, but they’ve passed over the franchise’s all-time scoring leader again and again.

Ewing has not been shy about his desire to return to New York, but that looks to be something that will never happen.

As far as the Knicks’ D-League opening, assistant general manager Allan Houston, who also serves as GM of the Erie BayHawks, told reporters on Monday that the team had settled on a coach. But Houston did not reveal who the coach was.

The Knicks also have an opening on their NBA coaching staff, but it does not appear that Ewing is a candidate, as former Bobcats assistant Lasalle Thompson is considered a leading candidate for the assistant’s job, according to two sources.

It’s always a nice story when a legend comes back home, but while that chapter of the book hasn’t totally closed, it looks to be pretty much all written.
