Charles Oakley: Was former Knick taking a jab at Carmelo Anthony and Co. with recent comments?

Former Knick Charles Oakley has been making headlines recently for his comments on Lebron and Jordan debate, but more importantly for his comments on the continuity of the New York Knicks’ roster.

“I think it’s all about how you view your team and everybody knowing what their roles are,” Oakley told The Post. “You look at Miami, the first year together, they made the Finals, but the second year they won it. They had a better understanding of their roles together. I think that’s what the Knicks need to do and players need to understand if they’re the first option, second option or third option. When a team is paying you $100 million you shouldn’t be arguing over who is first.”

At first glance, it seems Oakley is merely suggesting that the Knicks need to establish define roles on their team. But in actuality, Oakley is addressing the issues of chemistry and roster stability the Knicks have had since the arrival of Carmelo Anthony.  Issues that were evident in Stoudemire’s decline in production and their downward spiral before “Linsanity” emerge at the garden.

To remedy these issues Oakley like Stoudemire, believes that the Miami Heat should be the blueprint for their  championship aspirations.  He believes that it starts with everyone understanding their role on this team. Indeed I agree with this claim but the Knicks are victim of circumstance as well. Acquiring Anthony during the trade deadline in 2011 and entering lockout shortened training camp the Knicks had a hard time establishing roles given their situation.

But now with a new coach in Mike Woodson, a new more half-court system, and more stable roster the Knicks are now poised for a successful 2012-2013 season and second round appearance in the playoffs.  Hopefully Anthony and Co. will take these comments by Oakley as added motivation (probably Oakley’s intent) to prove to rest of the NBA universe that the Knicks can make the jump from playoff contenders to title contenders.
