New York Knicks forward Amar’e Stoudemire has been applauded this offseason for his decision to work on his post-game with Hakeem Olajuwon.

He’s training twice a day since May and down to 245 pounds, which is encouraging to hear for Knicks fans.

However his recent comments during a summer league telecast have set high goals for the 2012-13 Knicks team.

“Anything less than a championship,” the power forward said on MSG Thursday during Knicks’ Summer League broadcast from Las Vegas, “is a waste of a season.”

While it’s nice to see that STAT has high goals for this team, are they actually realistic goals?

Even though they’ve added the likes of Jason Kidd, Marcus Camby, Kurt Thomas and Raymond Felton, are the Knicks championship contenders?

They will be better for sure, but still have  ways to go before winning a championship.

This is still a team that have won a grand total of one playoff game since 2001. It’s still a team whose best player, Carmelo Anthony, has managed to get out of the first round only one time in his career.

I love the enthusiasm from Stoudemire, but there are steps to take before winning a title and winning a series or two in the postseason needs to come first.

In addition to his championship dreams, STAT also said he said he’s strong, healthy and ready to go, and is thrilled with the trade for Raymond Felton. The two worked well in their short time together before Felton was dealt to Denver as part of the Carmelo Anthony trade.

“Awesome, awesome acquisition with Raymond,’ Stoudemire said. ‘He’s a phenomenal player. He’s one of those guys you know is going to bring his ‘A’ game. Hes going to play extremely hard on both ends of the court and hes ready to win.’”

While it is nice to talk about championships, remember that this is July and the Knicks will still have a lot of questions to answer before the 2013 playoffs begin.
