New York Knicks Sign Point Guard Jason Kidd

In what has been a crazy 24 hours among NBA free agent point guards, unrestricted free agent Jason Kidd has spurned the Dallas Mavericks to sign with the New York Knicks.

ESPN’s Marc Stein reports via Twitter that Kidd is leaving Dallas to sign a multi-year deal in New York.

It was reported earlier that Kidd had reached a three-year deal with Dallas for around $9 million, but according to sources close to Stein, the deal with the Knicks is for similar money.

It’s unknown still if Jeremy Lin will be a New York Knick when the season begins, but chances are that Kidd was signed to be a mentor to Lin.

There’s been some talk that the Knicks may go after Raymond Felton instead of Jeremy Lin lately, but it appears New York is still set on re-signing Lin.

Sam Amick of SI.com tweeted on Thursday:

Kidd’s contract can’t actually be signed until July 11, which is the first day new NBA contracts can be signed. It’s also possible, one source said, that Kidd could ultimately move to the Knicks in a sign-and-trade deal.

Stein writes that Kidd was ultimately swayed to take the Knicks’ offer to come to New York and take on the challenge of trying to help the Knicks move into the Eastern Conference elite and also mentor fans’ darling Lin.

Kidd’s numbers were down in 2012, averaging a career-low 6.2 points and 5.5 assists and only shot 36.3 percent from the floor, but  he’s the type of pass first point guard who could be good coming off the Knicks bench.

His signing means the Knicks have to re-sign Lin because if Kidd is the Knicks starter they are in trouble.

One way or another, at least the Knicks have a point guard in the fold. It could be a Lin-Kidd duo or a Felton-Kidd duo, but whether or not the Knicks improved today remains to be seen.
