While many people are curious about how the Knicks point guard situation will play out or if the likes of Steve Novak or J.R. Smith will return to the New York Knicks for the 2012-13 campaign, one thing that people have the tendency to overlook is that shooting guard Iman Shumpert won’t be in uniform to start next season.

Looking at a potential 2013 starting lineup that could feature Jeremy Lin, Shumpert, Carmelo Anthony, Amar’e Stoudemire and Tyson Chandler and the Knicks could have as good as a starting five as there is in the NBA.

But first they have to get Shumpert healthy.

That may not take as long as originally thought as according to RealGM’s Michael Scotto (via the New York Post), Shumpert is eyeing a January return.

Shumpert has a long way to go in his rehab before getting back on the basketball court, but the January news is at least encouraging.

“The target date [for my return] is January,” Shumpert told The Post.

That would mean an eight month return and would be the worst-case scenario from the original 6-8 month timetable, but the last thing the Knicks need is to rush Shump back. Knee injuries can be tricky and they want to make sure Shumpert is 100 percent ready to go before they even think about bringing him back.

In the meantime, general manager Glen Grunwald will have to figure out how to fill the position.

Smith and Landry Fields are both options to return as is the possibility Grunwald looks outside the organization.

Whatever the decision on who the 2-guard is to start the season, it looks like it won’t be long before the Knicks defensive stopper makes his return to the floor.
