Knicks rookie Iman Shumpert has captured the attention of Mike D’Antoni and the Knicks coaching staff, so much so that they’ve inserted him into the starting role for the struggling Toney Douglas. It’s only been three games that he has started, but he already is improving and learning to play with Stat & Melo. New York fans were waiting for someone to come in a relieve Douglas of the starting duties, Iman is playing well, be he is just a hold-over until injured Baron Davis is fully healthy.
Landry Fields has started all of the Knicks 10 games this season, and he is yet to find his scoring groove. Outside of Amare and Melo, Fields is my favorite player on this squad, so writing this hurts a bit.
If Fields struggles continue throughout the month of January, we may very well see Landry buried on the bench in February. A healthy Baron Davis will take over at the point spot and the emerging Shumpert would slide into Fields 2 guard position. Coming off the bench for significant minutes could diminish as well if Bill Walker plays well in January. Fields could go from the unexpected almost rookie of the year to the ultimate sophomore slumper.
I HOPE this does NOT occur, I HOPE that Fields finds his shot/confidence again. New York loves a comeback story, hopefully his starts before the slump really starts. With his size, athleticism, defense, and rebounding, the Knicks NEED to help him get his consistent game back.
