Chandler in; Rautins, Billups and Turiaf Out

Well, its official: Tyson Chandler is a member of the New York Knicks. Ronny Turiaf and Any Rautins no longer are.

The Knicks acquired Tyson Chandler in a 3 team trade that sent Andy Rautins to the Mavericks as well as Ronny Turiaf and cash to Washington.  This move had been rumored for days, but was officially completed yesterday afternoon.

Landing the 7’1 Center is a big score for a team that has lacked the defensive presence necessary to compete for a championship. Chandler was the anchor of the Dallas Mavericks defense that was a key part of their championship run.Putting Chandler next to Stoudemire should shore of the interior defense, and hide some of Amar’e’s deficiencies on that end of the floor.

Combining Chandler with Melo and Stoudemire easily gives the Knicks the most formidable front line in the Eastern Conference. With the roster filling out in the next couple of days we could see the Knicks emerge as a legitimate contender to win the Eastern Conference, that is of course, if Amar’e’s knees can hold up over the course of the compacted season.

In order to make room for Chandler, the Knicks had to use the new Amnesty clause on Chauncey Billups and he was not happy about it. As a result the Knicks have a gaping hole at point guard.

The Knicks have reportedly signed what is left of Mike Bibby, but are also in the running for J.J Barea which will at the very least give them some bodies to throw out there at the point guard spot.

Whatever way you look at it, the Knicks are finally making moves, and appear to be ready to start playing some basketball instead of always looking forward to the next opportunity to acquire a free agent.

This is music to ears of Knicks fans everywhere that are ready for the new era of Knicks basketball to begin, and friends, that new era is upon us.
