#5: Amar"e Stoudamire

Best Season as a Knick: 25.3 PPG, 8.2 Rebounds, .502 FG%, All-star starter, 2nd Team All-NBA

How can Amare Stoudamire be number 5 on the all-time greatest Knicks list after only one year? I can give two reasons to support it.

First, I am basing it on age, future projection, talent, and impact on the team. In his first season as a Knick, he had one of the best all around seasons any Knick has had in the history of the franchise.

The second reason why Amare is number 5 is because he embraced the challenge of playing in New York. This is a franchise that has been terrible for the past decade. Nobody wanted to come and play for this team. LeBron wanted no part of being the main man in New York. He decided to ride Wade’s coat tails in Miami.

Amar’e embraced New York, and the responsibility of being the main man for the franchise. Even with the acquisition of Carmelo Anthony, Amar’e is the true leader of the team. It is similar to when the Rangers signed Mark Messier and the Mets traded for Mike Piazza. They gave the franchises credibility and took them into much greater times than they had ever experienced. Piazza led the Mets to a World Series and Messier is an immortal for leading the Rangers in ending the 54 year Stanley Cup drought. If Amar’e ever does what those two did, he will be remembered as a hero forever.

Even if he were never to lead them to a title, the Knicks should be back to being a potential title contender for the next 5 years. It has been so bad for Knick fans in recent years that having a winning record would be an improvement.
