Another Shooter, No Thank You

Early yesterday, SB Nation’s Tom Ziller posted his updated mock draft, and the selection he designated to New York was quite peculiar…

17. New York Knicks: Klay Thompson, SG, Washington State

There’s going to be a moment when the wider world beyond the hallowed halls of draft nerds realizes that Klay is the son of Mychal Thompson. I’m not sure if that moment will be good or bad for Klay’s stock. But it will be something.

Do the Knicks need a shooting guard in this draft? Certainly not, unless they plan on motivating/shaming Landry Fields. When it’s all boiled down, not only do the Knicks not need a shooting guard in this draft, they could probably do away with the position altogether (at least as it’s traditionally constituted). Not that surrounding Carmelo with shooters is a terrible idea, but he isn’t exactly known for making his teammates better—like LeBron. What Anthony needs is players with an ability to rebound and pass, increasing his shots instead of taking them away. (This is why Melo and Amar’e might never co-exist, but that story’s for another day.)

In case the Knicks make a fatalistic mistake and actually select Thomposon, here’s some more info courtesy of SI’s Sam Amick:

Teams appear to have put their red flags away when it comes to Washington State junior guard Klay Thompson, and he isn’t likely to slip past the mid-first round.

The Cougars’ leading scorer and son of longtime NBA forward Mychal Thompson was arrested in early March for possession of marijuana and suspended for his team’s regular-season finale against UCLA. After putting on a shooting performance that drew rave reviews in the gym, Thompson impressed in his interviews and in how he handled the topic of his arrest.

On second thought…grab him immediately!
